US Investors Eye IPO For China’s Alibaba
U.S. investors were preparing for Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group’s market debut in early September, which had been expected to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange, potentially one of the largest initial public offerings, or IPOs, ever. In 2013, Alibaba, accounting for about 80 percent of all online commerce in China, handled more Internet transactions than U.S.-based Amazon and eBay combined, with more than 230 million active buyers.
In an updated IPO filing, Alibaba indicated it would sell IPO shares for between $60 and $66 each. Thanks largely to Alibaba’s expected massive $20 billion IPO, companies are on pace to raise $80 billion from selling stock to the public for the first time this year, said an investment company. That’s 46% up from 2013 and the most money raised from the IPO market since the dot-com bubble of 2000.
Alibaba showed how a focus on tech talent has helped lead the company to a successful business model with high profit margins. Over 8,000 employees, or 36% of the company’s total, were listed as “engineering and data analytics” workers. That also suggested how much the company depended on evaluating customer data to decide which products to offer its online customers. However, Alibaba’s overall operating expenses for the Chinese firm rose faster than its revenue growth. The surging expenses present what will likely be one of the few caution flags for prospective Alibaba IPO investors.
